Water and Sewer - The city of Byron bills for water and sewer usage.

Bills are sent out monthly and are due on the 20th of each month. Please call City Hall at 507-775-3400 with name, service address, and closing date to establish your account. Once you receive your first bill, you will have the ability to setup automatic payments and select paperless billing. An account number will not be provided to you until you receive your first billing invoice. Account numbers will be found in the upper right-hand corner of your full-page billing invoice.

Water - is provided by two wells and two water towers with the capacity of 1,050,000 gallons. City water is chlorinated, fluoridated, and phosphate compounds are added for stabilization and corrosion control.

City Water has 17 grains of hardness.
The homeowner owns the service from the shutoff valve to the house. The City owns from the shutoff valve to the street.
Byron has a penalty for bypassing your home and/ or business water meters. Residents and/or Businesses caught bypassing their water meter for any reason will be given a $1,000 fine and may be issued a criminal citation.

Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant - is located at a City owned facility with an average flow of 520,000 gallons per day. The current facility was built in 1983 with an expansion that was completed in 2006.

The homeowner owns the sewer service from the connection at the street to the house.

If your water bill is higher than normal - here are some helpful hints on what may have caused it to go up:

Check your toilet - Toilets are the #1 cause for water bills increasing. For slight leaks that you can't see, put food coloring in the tank of your toilet(s) and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. If the food coloring goes into your bowl it is likely that you have an internal leak or a bad flapper.

Outside water sources - Make sure your faucets outside are not left on or dripping.

Water softener - Are you doing regular maintenance to your water softener? Is it regenerating properly?
Watering your Lawn - Running a sprinkler for just a few hours can cause your bill to increase significantly. An average household sprinkler running for 1 hour 3 times per week will use approximately 12,000 gallons per month.
Still can't find the source?? - If you still can't seem to find the cause, you can check your water meter itself. Make sure all the water is turned off in your house and there is no water being used anywhere. At the water meter, you will see a little tiny red dial under the lid. If that is spinning, then there is a water leak somewhere in your house. If you do not see a tiny red dial, you may see digital numbers. If those numbers are increasing while water is completely turned off, then there is a water leak somewhere in your house. You will need to contact a plumber to better pin point the source.
