Beginning Construction of Basketball Half-Courts in Valley View Park

By Gretta Becay

Early this year, Nate Ende and Mike Donovan of the Byron Youth Basketball Association spoke to the Byron Park Board members and the Byron City Council members about the possibility of having six half-court outdoor basketball courts built at Valley View Park. Nate explained that the association would contribute money for the equipment for the facility. They had already priced out the work and drawn up the plans. The group would like the facility to be finished in time for Good Neighbor Days, 2025 so they could host 3-on-3 tournaments.

Park Board members and city council members were all in favor of the idea and the facility was started Aug. 27. The facility will have the option to have one full court from end to end.

To build the courts, the outdoor volleyball courts were removed but they will be replaced elsewhere in the park, noted Public Works Director Tom Ricke. He also explained that the playground equipment at the park will be replaced in the near future, probably next year.
