Erin Mikkalson and Leah Quam at Byron’s new barber shop – The Combover - keep customers looking good

Erin Mikkalson hit the ground running when she opened her mobile barber shop in 2021, during the last months of the COVID pandemic. She had been a barber for more than 20 years having previously worked in Kasson and Rochester. She decided to go out on her own and so she had purchased a converted ice shack which she towed to her two locations: Plaza 57 in Kasson and Fleet Farm in Rochester.

Business picked up and she soon hired her best friend, Leah Quam to help in the two-chair shop.

But the constant maintenance on the trailer, the severity of Minnesota weather, and Leah’s child starting Kindergarten helped Erin make the decision to move her shop to a permanent location this year. In June, she opened The Combover in Byron at 957 Frontage Road NW, Office 1 and the business has boomed since then.

Why Byron? “I hoped to keep the majority of our customers by locating between the two cities,” she said.

The two women cut hair for men and boys. Walk-ins are welcome but it is easy to make an appointment to assure you can get in. The shop’s number is (507) 328-1308 and the hours are Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and closed Mondays.
