Memorial Day Ceremony

By Gretta Becay

On Memorial Day, men from the Sumner R. Hair American Legion Post 119 served as members of the color guard and the honor guard for the Memorial Day ceremony at the Byron Cemetery. A large group of spectators attended the event which included the reading of the names of all U.S. veterans buried in the cemetery. The veterans had served in all U.S. wars since the Civil War. Each of their graves has an American flag flying near it for the week surrounding Memorial Day courtesy of a dedicated group of volunteers who place and remove the flags each year.
