How hard is the water in Byron?

Our water has a hardness level of 17 grains per gallon, which is considered quite hard. You may notice mineral buildup on faucets or appliances. Many residents choose to use water softeners to help with that.

Do I get a discount on my water bill if I'm watering sod?

Not exactly—but here’s the good news! The City Council has capped sewer charges at 12,000 gallons for residential homes. That means while you’ll still pay for the water you use, your sewer fees won’t go up beyond that limit—even during heavy watering.

How do I get a pet license in Byron?

To license your pet, just stop by City Hall with a copy of their current rabies vaccination. For $25, you’ll receive a lifetime pet tag featuring a QR code that helps quickly reunite lost pets with their owners.

Who is responsible for the water and sewer lines?

For water lines, ownership is split:
  • The city owns the line from the street to the shutoff valve (typically in the boulevard).
  • The homeowner owns the line from the shutoff valve to the house.
Water break responsibilities follow that split—street side breaks are the City’s responsibility, while breaks between the shutoff valve and the house are up to the homeowner.

For sanitary sewer lines:
  • The city owns all sewer mains, usually located in the street.
  • The homeowner owns the line from the house to the main.
If a break occurs between the house and the main, the homeowner is responsible for repairs and any related expenses. Breaks in the sewer main are handled by the city.
